Netflix Stock Falls 6% as the 2026 Ad Forecast Is Cut to…
Netflix stock traded at $64.52 before Wednesday’s open, down 6.08% from Tuesday’s $68.69 close, after the company cut its 2026 advertising revenue forecast to about $2.7 billion from roughly $3 billion. The shares had already shed 1.66% in Tuesday’s regular session before the numbers landed.
Every other line in the quarter went the other way, which is what makes the reaction worth reading closely. Revenue of $12.87 billion met expectations, earnings came in five cents ahead at $0.87, and the operating margin widened to 34.6% from 28.2% a year ago. The market took the forecast instead, and Netflix stock is now being marked on a fourth quarter margin guide of 26.0% that carries 120 basis points of cost from the 1,000 job cuts announced last week.
Revenue Came In Line and EPS Beat by Five Cents
Revenue of $12.87 billion rose 12% year over year, matching what analysts had modeled, according to the shareholder letter filed as Exhibit 99.1. Diluted earnings of $0.87 beat the $0.82 consensus and compared with $0.59 a year earlier, and none of it held Netflix stock up.
Margins were the strongest part of the quarter, and they were not enough to matter. Operating income rose 37% to $4.46 billion for a 34.6% operating margin, against 28.2% in the same quarter last year and ahead of the 33.2% FinanceFeeds flagged as the number to clear. Netflix also said churn improved year over year in every region and came in better than forecast.
The 2026 Ad Target Fell to $2.7 Billion on Product Delays
The letter put the cut plainly, saying Netflix “currently expect 2026 ad revenue of ~$2.7B vs. approximately $3B previously” and attributing it to “slightly slower than expected rollout of some ad product capabilities.” That is roughly a 10% reduction to the business that was supposed to carry growth as subscriber gains slow, and it is the line Netflix stock is now priced against.
Co-chief executive Greg Peters told the earnings call the company had “seen some delays in the rollout and partner integrations for some of those new ads products,” and argued the timing was worth it, calling it “a modest short-term hit for a better long-term strategic position.” The ad tier reaches 15 new countries in 2027, with the first launches in March across nine EMEA markets plus Colombia, Peru and New Zealand.
Investor Takeaway
Netflix stock fell on a forecast cut to the segment carrying its growth story, so the 34.6% margin beat was never going to hold the shares up.
The 1,000 Job Cuts Cost 120 Basis Points of Q4 Margin
Netflix told staff on 14 October it would cut about 1,000 jobs, roughly 6% of its workforce and its largest reduction in years, in a memo from co-chief executives Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos. What the results added was the price tag, with the letter projecting “a Q4 operating margin of 26.0% which includes ~120 basis points negative impact associated with our recently announced headcount reductions,” and another 30 basis points off the full-year figure.
Peters said on the call that “sometimes the team needs a forcing function,” while chief financial officer Spence Neumann declined to put a number on the 2027 savings. Holders of Netflix stock therefore have a charge they can size for the fourth quarter and a benefit they cannot size for next year.
Netflix Stock Faces a 26% Q4 Margin Guide and a Trimmed Cash Flow Target
Fourth quarter guidance of $13.44 billion came in below the $13.51 billion analysts expected, with earnings guided to $0.67 and operating margin to 26.0%, which is 8.6 points below the quarter just reported. Full-year revenue guidance of $51.1 billion sits about 0.2% under the midpoint of the previous range, with the 31.5% margin intact and still well above the 29.5% Netflix posted in 2025.
A second cut went less noticed on Tuesday night, and it lands on 2026 cash generation. Netflix lowered its 2026 free cash flow forecast to about $12.0 billion from $12.5 billion, blaming the expected closing of a real estate transaction in the fourth quarter. The company generated $2.88 billion of free cash flow in the third quarter and $9.50 billion over nine months.
Netflix stock gapped the moment the ad forecast landed and has not recovered any of it overnight. Source: TradingViewThe pattern of an advertising miss outweighing an earnings beat is not unique to Netflix. Reddit beat on earnings and lost 9% anyway when its advertising outlook disappointed, and the current bull and bear case on Netflix stock was built before this guide. Tesla and Meta report later in a week that began with the Nasdaq down 4.5%.
Investor Takeaway
Netflix stock is being marked on a 26.0% fourth quarter margin guide rather than the 34.6% it just delivered, and 120 of those basis points are the one-off layoff charge.
